I have a printer connected to a linux computer that I want my mac to
be able to use.
I have tried several distros (umbuntu, fedora, Knnoppix, Suse) but
they all have a problem.

note: the computer is also a NAS server. I 'don't' do command line.

Any more info we can get? What programs have you installed? What
errors did you get? What do the log files say? Does the printer work
fine on the linux box? What kind of printer?

The Printer works fine for linux. It is an hp deskjet 870Cse.
I usally just installed the base system + samba + cups
Suse- The cups server can't start

How did you try to start it? What errors did you get?
I tried to start it form the kde print manager (gui).

Fedora- 4 dosn't support video card

What video card?
Voodoo banshee

               5 install craches

Does it give an error? Where does it crash? Did the cds check out ok? Do
you have unusual hardware on the machine?
it does give and error. the cds checkout (using the the check media 'utility' in the installer) I suspect the crash is due to memory. The computer that crashes has 127 mb it installed just fine on my other computer. I think the video card is the only thing that is wierd

on different hardware the win drivers need to be installed
for cups to export drivers but they are in a exe package

I'm not quite certain what you're trying to say here. Can you be a bit
more clear please?
After starting cups i go to the mac and select teh shared printer. it has no driver information. Under knoppix if I export the drivers for windows (a menu option available forma right click in the gui print manager) it doesn't finish the series of dialogue boxes because i don't have the windows driver however it exports any way, so the *nix drivers are exported and my mac can use them. The windows drivers come in an exe and a web how-to says i need to copy 4 of the driver files to a cups driver folder

knoppix- Samba won't start

How did you try to start it? What error did it give when you tried?
I go to the gui control panel and try to set it up

Umbunta- doesn't have a samba GUI

I'm assuming you mean Ubuntu. Did you look to see if there was one you
could install? What's the one you tried to use elsewhere? Is there a
particular GUI you're looking for? Did you check to see if
aptitude/synaptic has the GUI?

I just don't know enough to track down and install one I tried a few but kept getting errors
I don't know if they can help you at the meetings. From what sco++
said, I'm guessing they will be willing to help, but you'll probably
want to see about getting as much information as possible, since the
more information you provide, the more likely that they'll be able to
solve the problem in the amount of time that is available.
