Schroeder: we need Russia's
help
BRIGHTON - Russia needs to be involved in improving Europe's common defence against extremists following last month's attacks on the United States, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder will say later on Monday. "Common security in Europe cannot be guaranteed without Russia," Schroeder will tell the annual conference of Britain's ruling Labour Party, according to an advance copy of his speech. Europe needs to exchange experience and information in the fight against terrorism, Schroeder will say. While partnership with the United States will remain the foundation of Europe's security, the European Union must make itself more effective within NATO, he will say. "That is the precondition for a sustainable and equal partnership with our American allies. And it is the pre-condition for closer cooperation on security between Europe and Russia." Schroeder will reaffirm that Germany is united with Britain, the rest of Europe and the United States in fighting terrorism. The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon "were not only an attack on people and buildings but on every human civilisation." Schroeder will also say he fully agrees with the British government's moves to improve international cooperation so that terrorists can be starved of finance. -Reuters
