Stupidity Virus Spreads to England

"The head teacher of a nursery school in Yorkshire, England, has banned 'The
Three Little Pigs' 'for fears it will offend Muslims,' the Yorkshire Post
reports."

Beer for Bombs!

In order to counter the peacenik-inspired "Books Not Bombs" student walkout
on college campuses earlier this week, the National Youth and Student War
Coalition is organizing a pro-war demonstration of their own this weekend.

Supporters of the "Beer for Bombs" rally will "go to bars and watering holes
in solidarity with students across the country to show our support for the
war on Iraq," reports Jason Claybourn of the Hoosier Review. "All students
drinking and having fun at bars on March 7th and 8th will of course be
celebrating their freedom to take part in such an act - freedoms not
afforded to the youth of Iraq."

Now, these are TRUE AMERICANS in our finest tradition. Glad to see some of
our college students still have their priorities straight...BEER! In fact,
although I'm way beyond my college years, I think I just might have to visit
the local tavern myself this weekend as a show of support and solidarity.
Cheers!

Rather Embarrassing

"A man employed by CBS News to speak the words of Saddam Hussein during his
interview with Dan Rather last week reportedly adopted a fake Arabic accent.
CBS News hired Steve Winfield, a Screen Actors Guild member with no such
accent in real life."

- Greg Pierce's "Inside Politics," 3/6/03

Leno-isms

The following quotes from Tonight Show host Jay Leno were compiled by our
friends over at The Federalist:

"Saddam Hussein has given an exclusive interview to Dan Rather on '60
Minutes' in which he said he has no intention of leaving, stepping down or
going into exile. He said he'd rather die than leave. Just like the cast of
'60 Minutes.' .... The latest word is that Saddam Hussein may have back
problems. They think he got it playing softball with Dan Rather. .... I've
seen people ask Ron Popeil tougher questions on infomercials. .... .... It
looks like the United Nations is drawing up another resolution to send to
Saddam Hussein. I think this is like the 300th one we've sent. Apparently
the UN has a secret weapon to kill Hussein -- it's called old age."

Must Not See TV

CBS News, home to the above-mentioned Dan Rather, is planning to revive the
old "60 Minutes" segment dubbed "Point/CounterPoint" later this year
featuring Bill Clinton and Bob Dole. Yawn. Thank goodness for Nick at
Night. At least there you can find re-runs you WANT to watch.

Big Stakes in Judicial Battle

"Recently, for the first time in judicial history, (Democrats) decided to
make the confirmation of (Miguel) Estrada the subject of a filibuster, which
under the Senate rules can be ended only by a vote of 60 members. . . . The
GOP had better win this one, or they will never be able to name a
conservative to an important federal court until they command 60 votes in
the U.S. Senate."

- Columnist William Rusher

Bring On the Filibuster

"The Republicans' cloture decision on Mr. Estrada suggests they may finally
be waking up to the stakes here. So far they've let the Democrats get away
with a gentleman's filibuster--no sleeping bags, no multi-hour,
bladder-busting orations. Their excuse is that all 51 GOP Senators would
have to be on hand or else even a single Democrat could shut things down for
lack of a 'quorum.'

"But who said Senate work was all cakes and fund-raisers? Without the
spectacle of bleary-eyed Senators staggering to the floor in the wee hours,
the press corps (much less the public preoccupied with war) won't pay much
attention."

Weapons of Mass Obstruction

"President Bush offered a broad framework yesterday for overhauling Medicare
that includes rewarding recipients who shift to private health care
providers, a plan Senate Democrats immediately dismissed and vowed to
defeat."

- Washington Times, 3/5/03

On the Brink of BK

"Medicare will start running deficits in 2016 and go bankrupt in 2030, so
fundamental reform must begin now, (Health & Human Services Secretary Tommy)
Thompson said. . . . Democrats have pledged to oppose the president's plan,
and might stage a filibuster."

- Washington Times, 3/6/03

Medi-Scare

"Opponents of President Bush's effort to reform Medicare have a simple plan
of attack: Scare America's seniors."

- Columnist Robert Moffitt

GOP Hangs W Out to Dry

"(President Bush's) proposal to give seniors a choice to stay in the
existing Medicare program or take the money and join a private health plan
to the horror of the Democratic Party (and some Republicans) is the most
dramatic domestic policy initiative since the introduction of Medicare in
1965. Unfortunately, his own party is abandoning the president before the
battle for reform has even been waged.

"...Only (Senate) Majority Leader Bill Frist, like Joshua of old, has
refused to spurn the Bush plan and join in the revelry around the golden
calf of free drugs for geezers regardless of income...

"Republicans have failed to think through any portion of the president's
plan, from the issue of access to new medicines to the growing problem of
rampant entitlements. The sellout of the President has been so rapid and so
complete it is breathtaking. Faced with a situation where their president
needed backing, the Republicans didn't even toss him a bone."

- Robert Goldberg of the Manhattan Institute

Airport Insecurity

"I just got back from West Palm Beach. In the airport I met an 80-year-old
man who was searched by the Detroit security because he has a wooden leg
with a metal knee. They made him remove the leg and take off the shoe.
That is really hard to do, because the shoe is put on and just stays there.
It's very hard to get on and off. They made him take off his belt and went
thru his Insulin kit. I know how scary those 80-year-old Polish Catholic,
diabetics can be."

- News & Views reader Mary Carducci

Enviro-Wackos Wrong on Recycling

"Throw away the green and blue bags and forget those trips to return
bottles - recycling household waste is a load of, well, rubbish, say leading
environmentalists and waste campaigners.

"In a reversal of decades-old wisdom, they argue that burning cardboard,
plastics and food leftovers is better for the environment and the economy
than recycling. They dismiss household trash separation - a practice
encouraged by the green lobby - as a waste of time and money."

- London Daily Telegraph, 3/3/03

Not Your Daddy's Union

"In most big cities, public employee labor unions elect the city council.
It's cost-effective for them. In effect, the government unions control both
sides of the bargaining table. For a few million bucks in campaigns, their
return is tens, even hundreds of millions in sweetheart contracts. . . .
These are not your father's union leaders. These ideologues feel solidarity
with others, not America. Moreover, they are partisan Democrats."

- Columnist and political strategist Arnold Steinberg

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
