I have nmake.exe installed into the c:\perl\bin directory. Maybe when it is
called from Perl, it's expecting to be in that directory although you'd expect
that it should be fine if it's in the path. Do you shell to a DOS prompt when
you run the perl Makefile.PL, nmake, nmake install combo? Maybe you should check
your path in the shell. I don't know of any dependencies of nmake but I'm very
new to using this tool.

Yes, setting up Perl for Windows platforms is a mixed bag. Did you say which
version of Windows you are using? I'm using NT4 and am able to make Perl
packages just fine except when it entails compiling. Learning to use the Cygnus
port of gcc as my c compiler is on the to-do list.
