Peter,
I don't have pics on my install, but I did it myself and yes, the
plastic needs to be cut. Here are some notes I posted previously this
year when I added my sissybar:

The luggage rack was a bit scary to install, especially when I got
the
instructions that said to cut away the rear fairing and drill out the
fender support holes. If anyone else does this to their bike, I will
give you some advice-
1- make sure to put a 1/4" piece of wood behind the support holes to
protect the rest of the bike from the drill bit.

2- Tape off the ends of the backrest support legs where they bolt up
to the shock mounts, or tie some cloth around them temporarily before
you get the cuts completed. That way you can slide the rear fairing
on
and off to check and correct your cuts without scratching the outside
of the fairing.

3- Use a Dremel for your cuts- don't use a knife like the
instructions
show. The plastic is not uniformly thick, and you can cut farther
than
you want if you put too much pressure on it. Besides it is pretty
flimsy when off the bike.

4- After I got the cuts done to where everything fit well, I used a
Dremel with a tapered bit to smooth and radius the cuts, then sanded
the edges smooth with emory. The result looks like a factory
installation.
