I've had an '89 (the first year of this marquee) and now have an '94. There was
a design change after '89 which continued thru '96. The '97 and '98 were a bit
different again. However, they are all the same under the skin. 800cc V-Twin
with hydraulic valve adjusters, etc. Mostly ride and don't worry about
anything. Following the maintenance manual will get you over 100,000 and in
some of our group, 200,000 miles without any major work.
This is a touring bike and not a hot rod. Smooth, steady and I have seen 60+
MPG on both of mine, freeway or long distance. I have a custom "Rick Mayer"
leather seat on mine now in deference to my poor back.
The '89's had two things notable: 1: The rear tire rubbed on the inside of the
trunk liner, wearing a hole. That is if you ran at the mfg recommend 33/33 F/R.
Most of us run 39-41 F and 43/46 R. I'm about 175lbs and run 39/43 F/R.
2: They seemed to have a weak stator in '89, mine failed at 49,500 miles. Part
of the problem may have been poor connections to ground, etc. However, a bunch
of the PC group run heated clothing, extra lights, radios, CB's, etc so may
overload the system.
I'd buy another '89 in a heart beat; I loved the White.
All parts still available and everything will fit every model.
Plus we have the best site on the web, "IPCRC". Everyone is very helpful and
have little sniping or side chatter. Plus we have the service Manuel and the
owners Manuel plus a bunch of other data on-line.
