I took off the coils and put a meter across the two input terminals, I get 3
ohms, then I took off the spark plug wires and tested across the two pins that
stick ito the leads, I get nothing, is this correct, should I be getting a
reading or are the coils history, funny both coils should read the same!

pull your tank off and remove your coils. you can try to dry them out,
but the best fix is a replacement for them. and try to clean ALL
electrical connections .  look atyour wiring as well, when wires get
old the insulation sometimes cracks , add a little water  and you get
a mess. good luck
