Here in Hawaii it's illegal and the police will chaise you down if the
catch you lane splitting.  However, when I lived in California it was
legal and I lane split from time to time.  Like anything else, it
comes down to the rider.  Lots of times motorcycles would fly past me
when I was stuck in traffic in my car.  It always amazed me at how
fast some of these bikes would go between cars.  I never felt
comfortable and was always very careful.  In Hawaii our lanes are much
narrow and we just don't have room between cars - it just doesn't work
and is way too dangerous.

It's all about riding safe - what ever your definition of safe is.
