It comes down to how are you going to use the bike? Commute or weekend rider. If your commuting I would get the newest bike you can find. A newer bike will have less issues and parts are more available - especially if you can get a 2002 750.
I own a 82 650 and a 96 750. I commute on the 750 every day (I live in Hawaii so I deal with a lot of rain but no cold). I took the 650 for a 2,000 mile / 7 day ride last summer. The 650 struggled over some of the mountain passes and leaks oil so I had to add some about every 500 miles. My 750 has developed a small leak in the last 6 months. I don't have to add oil it just takes longer to clean when I wash it. I switched the 750 seat for a corbin because on a longer ride - 2 hours - my backside was sore. I wouldn't want to ride a long distance on the stock seat. The 650 seat is stock and really comfortable - no need to change it. I have bought lots of parts for both bikes on eBay and other sites. Some new parts are available for the 750. If you need a part you will be able to find it, you may just have to be patient on eBay. The 90's and older bikes are bigger and taller than the 80's bikes. Hope this helps and welcome to the work of the nighthawks. Keep um rubber side down. S.
