I'll write further instructions a bit later today. Your variation isn't as bad
as what I suspected it might be. Prepare yourself, from this point on you'll be
removing parts to check individual components for true. I need a bit of time to
formulate a sequence so you don't have to spend too much time with this. For
now, use a square and project it through the axle centers and mark the floor.
Measure the wheelbase from the marks. Anything shorter than 58.5" will indicate
it having made a hard contact at some time. Use a short straight edge along the
front frame down tubes to check for any bowing. I don't expect any but it's a
good time to check. Incidentally, the low tire pressures contributed to this
tire wear quite a bit. I use Avon tires and run 34 front, 40 rear. Dunlops seem
to show feathering (your condition) more than any other brand.

Dennis:

Test results are as you predicted. The front wheel is not square and
it is not centered when compared to the rear. Off aligment by about
+/- 3/8 inch and out of square by +/- 1/8 inch. Tires were 10 lbs low
on air. No signs of front end damage or repair. Please note I
replaced the fork seals when I first got it and completely
dissasembled both forks . The shop manual doesnot specify a the fork
placement (height) in the clamps. The are currently 3/8 inch (fork
tube not including cap) above the top clamp same for both sides.

What next?

Glen
