Many domestic Honda's came back here in the 70's. I saw a 450 that came over on an aircraft carrier. Very different bike. Single set of points, 360 crank. Italian inspired top end, Brit bottom. Kinda' like a twin cam Norton.

Landed in Charleston the first time and was not notified, so missed the takeoff; watched the plane leaving with all my luggage. Got another flight but it was way out of the way, with a connection to one of the bases in La. - England, I seem to recall. That one was just for leave; the second was for my grandmother's funeral. It went without a hitch, both ways. I wished I could have brought my 550 Four back with me, but both flights were rushed, and no time to strap it down. You are right about the turboprops. The props don't have to be perfectly balanced and I think that's why there is so much down time to either replace or adjust the props. They switched to four blades because it is easier to "balance" them. No, they just don't have to be as precisely balanced as a three-blade prop. Less hassle, less down time spent on props. The advantage of reversible props over jet engines with rear deflectors, however, is incredible. A C-130 can make a tactical landing in the length of a football field, fully loaded. That, of course, is why the bird has such heavy landing gear. But I digress. Many guys brought over Jap bikes directly from Japan. It cost $75 to crate it and just stick it on the plane on the way back - if there is room, which one has to determine ahead of time. It was cheaper than buying from the local dealership (Honda), which, I mentioned before, became so exasperated over having to replace exhausts on the Fours (350, 550, or 750 when it came out) under warranty that he offered aftermarket exhaust systems at a very tempting price, which most took to. By contrast, the 450 seemed to last forever. I felt its fit and finish was better, and its exhausts certainly stayed looking new for years if kept inside or cleaned regularly. Remember Puerto Rico is an island and the air base was right at the shore. Lots of salt spray in the air... ________________________________ From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Sat, March 20, 2010 4:11:10 PM Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re:the week I did 2-hops coast-to-coast. Once from Norton/San Berdoo & the other from March/Riverside Wanted to go to Andrews on leave to visit my family here in the east. Got stranded in Columbus Ga. the 1st try & Biloxi the 2nd attempt. Did a C-141 & C-130. The jet engines sure are smoother than the prop-jobs. It's like going from an airliner to a commuter flight.
