I thought I said sounded different.  Oops.  I didn't know about the torsion
valve springing.  Of course, it seems like an eccentric cam for adjustment
would be the way to go.  Was there ever a problem with the torsion bars?  I
only vaguely remember something about torsion bars, but I wasn't paying
attention.  I am sure  I'd have freaked if someone asked me to adjust
their valves on a 450 back then, but the one or two I saw that may have been so
equipped I did not know at all.
Back then, I rode  one of three bikes or a 10-speed bicycle.  I had a 125, 350,
and a 550 Four.  I wasn't too crazy about the 550, so I rented it out. That
paid for the machine...

They look just like the imported bikes. This one was black. Only when you open
the point cover and see just one set.... Then start it and it sounds more Brit
than anything. A 360 crank. Both pistons rise and fall together, instead of the
180 crank that has them moving in opposite directions. Before the modern 180
/200 / 250 / 400 / 450...et al., the 180 crank was the way to go for the
Japanese. The CB~CL 160 / 250 / 305 / 350 / 360 / 450 use them for balance and
high R's. If you examine a Honda Dream (CA), you see a single carb. That's
possible with a 360 crank. The Super Hawk was a 180 design. The throttle
response was slower and the thing had a vibration mode more like a BSA. Yes,
it's a beautiful engine, see attachment of '66 450. Torsion bar valve springs,
eccentric valve adjusters, twilight zone tech for it's time.

There was one like you describe on base, when I was in Puerto Rico, and it was
just gorgeous.  A deep, forest green.  That explains why the engine looked
different.

Many domestic Honda's came back here in the 70's. I saw a 450 that came over on
an aircraft carrier. Very different bike. Single set of points, 360 crank.
Italian inspired top end, Brit bottom. Kinda' like a twin cam Norton.

My only hops were from Puerto Rico to La. twice.  Landed in Charleston the
first time and was not notified, so missed the takeoff; watched the plane
leaving with all my luggage.  Got another flight but it was way out of the way,
with a connection to one of the bases in La. - England, I seem to recall.
That one was just for leave; the second was for my grandmother's funeral.  It
went without a hitch, both ways.
I wished I could have brought my 550 Four back with me, but both flights were
rushed, and no time to strap it down.
You are right about the turboprops.  The props don't have to be perfectly
balanced and I think that's why there is so much down time to either replace or
adjust the props.  They switched to four blades because it is easier to
"balance" them.  No, they just don't have to be as precisely balanced as a
three-blade prop. Less hassle, less down time spent on props.
The advantage of reversible props over jet engines with rear deflectors,
however, is incredible.  A C-130 can make a tactical landing in the length of a
football field, fully loaded.  That, of course, is why the bird has such heavy
landing gear.
But I digress.  Many guys brought over Jap bikes directly from Japan.  It cost
$75 to crate it and just stick it on the plane on the way back - if there is
room, which one has to determine ahead of time.  It was cheaper than buying
from the local dealership (Honda), which, I mentioned before, became so
exasperated over having to replace exhausts on the Fours (350, 550, or 750 when
it came out) under warranty that he offered aftermarket exhaust systems at a
very tempting price, which most took to.
By contrast, the 450 seemed to last forever.  I felt its fit and finish was
better, and its exhausts certainly stayed looking new for years if kept
inside or cleaned regularly.
Remember Puerto Rico is an island and the air base was right at the shore.
Lots of salt spray in the air...

I did 2-hops  coast-to-coast.  Once from Norton/San Berdoo & the other from
March/Riverside

Wanted to go to Andrews on leave to visit my family here in the east.

Got stranded in Columbus Ga. the 1st try & Biloxi the 2nd attempt.

Did a C-141 & C-130.  The jet engines sure are smoother than the prop-jobs.
It's like going from an airliner to a commuter flight.
