Thank you very much... I already told him that the cluster was not a deal
breaker... And even if i have to fabricate a harness, it wont be that big a
deal for me... Thanks

Alright, I have similar issues on my '83 CB550SC. My overall fix, when
finished, is "refurbing" the main wiring harness and when done with that,
I'll move to the secondary wires that are after the harness.

First, I'd look at the bike in person and look for any visual signs that
could be the problem. If the wiring is all chewed up that could be a sign of
it sitting in a garage long-term with mice. In my case, the person I got it
from was half a$$ed and they screwed the wiring up for me.

Second, I'd take note of what works and what doesn't. In my case the
headlight, ignition switch (the key), and handlebar kill switch all work but
the turn signals, horn, and indicators (High beam, brake, overdrive, etc) do
not. After inspecting the wires, I found that some of the harness connectors
were broken and that's why I bought a new harness that I'm refurbing. Pay
special attention to the bundle of wiring behind the headlight as chances
are that's where your wiring issues are going to be. In my opinion, as long
as the bike runs fine, the dead cluster shouldn't be a deal breaker as the
main harness is pretty straight forward, cheap (I paid $25 for a used
harness in decent shape), and I'm sure widely available. Also, the cluster
for *my* bike on eBay runs about $100 after shipping so in the off chance
the cluster itself is bad, it's still a reasonable expense to get everything
working right.

If you get into replacing the harness, let me know as I've learned some tips
and tricks along the way that will probably help you too.

Peace
Sean

So, tomorrow i might be trading my 250 for an 83 650.... Problem is the ad
says that the instrument cluster is non-functional... Other then that the
only issue is that it has 41k miles.... Any idea what might cause the
instrument cluster to go out???

Thanks guys i hope this deal goes through... I need a bigger bike
