low voltage output from generator at low rpms - that was true on the 550 as well as the '83 650 right? If so that might explain the dimming headlight when using turn signals. Weak battery can still read good voltage - also a consideration. Graham

I have checked the battery and have good voltage, but something else
I've noticed at night is that the turn signals dim the headlamp a fair
bit when flashing. One final piece of info is that whenever I make a
short stop somewhere (5-20 minutes) the bike needs several attempts to
get it going again. Any suggestions for a newbie?
