So this is where it all started... Many have said much, including myself, about synthetic oils. Some are better than others, the best in stores being Mobil 1, most years. If you are going to go with Amsoil, use their filter or a Wix or a Donaldson or Hastings. It has to filter out stuff for 25,000 miles or more and these can do it. Most you purchase at the local parts houses and WallyWorld&etc do not sell these filters. Too expensive, but they do a much better job. If you have to use a cheap filter, don't make it Fram. They have some not so dependable innards... I am sorry, but I don't remember the ones to use that are sold locally, but I think Purolator is one. Ford Motocraft is another. And change it about halfway through the 25,000 or more miles, and top off the oil. You can go back, and you can even mix them together, but if you do you lose your longevity, with Amsoil. Providing there are no problems, it will run cooler and use a little less fuel. As for it being exactly 20°cooler, I can not say. If your engine is not healthy, is old and/or it wasn't well maintained, then switching to synthetic may cause problems, because seals that have deteriorated and are doing their job because of crud taking up the slack, will begin to leak, on account of the cleaning action of the oil. You will end up having to add oil more frequently and that defeats one of the purposes of changing: save money by not buying as much oil. BTW Diesel rigs go from 40,000 to 60,000 between oil changes; but with a bypass filtration system and Amsoil, they never have to change their oil again. They change the filters and top it off. These systems are available for autos also. You never have to change your oil. Some have gone over 500,000 with no oil change. And now, I hope this expands on Graham's answers well enough to give you the criteria to make a more informed decision pro or against the switch. ciao, Stanley

I'm changing my bikes over to pure synthetic oil and I have some questions. I wanted to know: 1) if the synthetics last twice as long between oil changes then do I use a regular oil filter? 2) I was told that once I change to synthetics I can't change back to regular oil...true or false? 3) I was also told that my bikes should run up to 20 degrees cooler with synthetics...true?
