Fact is, unruly kids date way back.  My step-mother was a teacher before going
to Japan, and she had unruly kids in a class she was subbing.  One started to
climb up the radiator pipes by the window while her back was turned to the
chalkboard.  When she turned around and queried as to what he was doing, he
refused to reply.  She told him to get back in his seat and his reply was, MAKE
ME!

Well, she walked over there and grabbed him by his ear and tweaked it, pulling
him down and pulling him by his ear all the way to his seat.
You got to know that she was a very small woman to appreciate the gutsy act she
demonstrated to the class by taking this guy on.

Now, this was in 1954.  You can't touch students now.  In jr hi kids who were
really out of hand and refused to comply with class rules with mild discipline
had to go to the principle's office and he used a paddle on their backsides if
an agreement and understanding couldn't sink into the thick skulls of some of
those of my classmates.  This was in San Antonio.  My second time there, back
in
'57.
Time out??? Are you serious???
It's worse now.  My ex g/f subbed before she aquired her present position and
they had to call in the "resident cop" on the first graders for fighting in the
classroom - never mind their foul language.

The other deplorable part of this is that the public workers' unions have so
much power that even the governor - not that he is much of one - in Calif. told
the legislators, in a somewhat sardonic manner,  why are you asking me - go to
the unions responsible for your election.  That's not a quote, but the general
idea...
That was because of his attempt to place a freeze on all public employee
salary increases to balance the budget.
I am sure you have heard about the exhorbitant salaries of cops?  Like, over
$120,000 in (I think) SanDiego?
Cops here may make $32,000; teachers, around the same, and they get three
months
off besides.

Sorry to see you won't be on here much; hope all goes well. I'd still
like to talk to you about your Mopar stuff.

As for the school system "talk".... I believe public schools have
their place in a childs life and development (both in education, as
well as personality). I also believe the schools are almost crippled
with rules, and unruly kids, which makes it next to impossible to do
much teaching.

We have a good family friend who is one of the life long educators/
teacher. She is one of the nicest people I know (too nice). She spends
1/2 her time trying to teach, and the other 1/2 trying to control the
animals (I have seen this first hand).

Good luck Kim!!
