My 700 and 650 both will start in any gear too as long as the clutch is pulled in. It does have a kill switch hooked up to the clutch, that's something else to check. As long as the engine turns over by hand you can try shorting the starter to ground with a stout screwdriver. If you electrocute yourself or blow the bike up you didn't hear that advice from me ;)
