Have you thought of using a helicoil instead of making it a larger, and possibly SAE, instead of the original metric?
BTW: You can get a chart (or copy of one) at most machine shops because they are always dealing with conversions when it comes to repairing bolt holes. Because the case of a Beetle engine is made of relatively soft magnesium alloy (shavings actually spark and burn, and the case may burn in a bad gas fire by the engine), pulled studs are a common problem. It's not that difficult to drill, tap, and insert a helicoil, and go back with the original bolt, stud, etc. Now, in the case of 250 exhaust studs, which are 7mm and rare except maybe at the stealership, I went with an 8mm instead, since there seems to be a problem with studs breaking off on a 250 anyway. I can aquire the 8mm at the local fastener shop. And yes, I could use something in between 7mm and 8mm in SAE, but it may be confusing to the next owner, so I just as soon choose 8mm instead. 7mm = .27559 in.; 8mm = .31496 in. If I wanted to use SAE, 5/16in as a decimal is .3125, or just a little smaller than 8mm. There are charts for all sizes of drills in inches, and I am sure you can determine the size hole you need for a specific tap, be it metric or SAE... Machining in metric made my head hurt. I'll post pictures once I dump my camera again. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Nighthawk Motorcycle Lovers!" group.
