I had the same problem with my HJC. I took out a dremel tool and shaved about 1/4 an inch in the area that was resting on the top of my forehead. Have ridden it that way for about 1.5 years with total comfort. Of course I didn't need the protection because I've kept my head off the ground.
A friend I've known sense 1st grade has designed helmets for Bell (Bicycle and Motorcycle) as well as most Bicycle helmet companies. I spoke with him a lot about my modification before I did it. The problem would be if you had a direct blow where you take the lining out - it wouldn't make that much of a difference if you took a blow to the side or back of the head. Other people have talked about pounding the area with a hammer to make it thinner. DON'T DO THAT. According to my friend it will destroy all the safety in the helmet. The liner is bonded to the shell and that bond is about 50% of the safety for the helmet. Pounding the helmet will effect that bond. Also according to my friend we should be replacing our helmets ever 2 years anyway - the Styrofoam degrades to the point that it gets hard and therefor just like hitting your head on the ground.
