Realy.... I know that some of there engines used the same everything except carb (the 2.5 and 3.5 are identical except the jetting, same with the 6 and 8) but i hadent heard that about the rest of them.... Good thing we realy dont want to plane, uses more fuel... Other then the starter already going out and the slow speed jet constantly clogging i dont have any complaints, i just need to take it in to get it fixed (bought a new 09 earlyer this year, so its still under warente)

Yeah those 9.9Mercs are junk. Midway through my time there they switched all the engines from the Evinrudes to those things. They were carbed so lean it required a fasting priest and Popeye to get it to start and it never had enough torque to get the boat up on plane with more than one person in it. The Evinrude would do it with 3 people and a load of gear. They tried swapping the engine on the chase boat to one of those and the 3 of us that had to drive it put up such a fuss that they switched back to the Evinrude.
