If you hooked a working 12v source directly to the starter and it didn't do
anything, it probably is indeed the starter. If you're lucky it's something
simple like the brushes.

How many miles on the bike?

I recently purchased a seemingly well-tuned fully functional '86
Nighthawk S. It ran wonderfully for a week. Then one morning I
fired it up and rode 40 miles toward work but stopped early at a gas
station. After filling it up.... it wouldn't start. Mechanic says
its probably the starter motor after he hooked up a working 12v to the
terminals on the starter and it didn't turn over. Any ideas? This is
my first bike and I really feel stranded. Thanks so much.
