+1 on the jack. I put the bike on the center stand, then use a small bottle jack (Wally World - $12), with a thin piece of wood as a cushion, up between the pipes and use the forward part of the oil pan as a jack point.
Just be sure you're on level ground and don't sit on the bike while it's on the jack. Clean and repack the speedo housing with multi-purpose grease (bearings too, unless they're sealed), put a thin coat on the axle and torque all the bolts to spec on reassembly.
