You're right! I found however that you can take off the clear coat
with an electric sander or drill with a sanding wheel - very fine
paper of course and then polish with aluminum polish and get a much
nicer looking side cover than before in a fraction of the time.

Polishing aluminum is as much art as skill and involves lots of steps,
and the patience of a saint. It starts with removing any clear coat,
then sanding in steps with progressively finer papers, then polishing
(again, in steps, with progressively finer "cutting" compounds and
rouges) and finally buffing and waxing.
The choice is pretty simple -- you can have a life -- or you can have
shiny aluminum (!)
