Suggestion: Replace the spark plugs.
I had these exact same symptoms during my MSR course on a 90's Nighthawk 250.
Originally I thought I just had to tweak the choke while riding, which I thought
was a really dangerous way to ride. I made some comment and the instructors
laughed and didn't take me seriously.
4 hours later I kept complaining and the instructor finally took me seriously
and got on the bike. He rode it for like 15 seconds, brought it back, went to
the storage shed, came back with two new spark plugs, pulled the old ones out --
man they were gunked up! -- put the new ones in and WHAMO, I didn't need the
choke for the rest of the day or the next (after the engine warmed, of course).
So, I say check the plugs, see if they're similarly disgusting, and replace
them, see if that fixes it.
Peace,
+Lie

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] Question about Choke
Wow, I've got a lot of questions this week.
Motorcycle: Nighthawk650sc
So, I'm the guy with the starved bike from last week (pinched fuel line). I
fixed the fuel line and she's been ok. However, the bike won't idle if I
close the choke (it's always about half way down). Yesterday, I took it for
a long ride on a really hot day (70+) and was stuck in traffic a lot and I
had to keep revving the engine or open the choke more so she wouldn't die. I
must mention that I just got the bike back from the shop where they did a
full carb rebuild/cleaning. Any ideas what might be going on?
Thanks,
Stefano
