Thanks for the good (and bad) ideas. I've had the MI permit twice. They are
good for six months (one 'season' up there), then expire. I never rode much
because the bike was torn apart most the time. If you've had two permits
expire and never got the full license, you are required to take a safety
course.
The trick that I used last summer was the MI permit while living in WI, but
you must follow local laws where ever you are; so I could ride by myself in
WI legally on the MI permit. Kind of like the helmet law - even if you're
from WI where you don't need one, you still need a helmet back in MI.

Perhaps the biggest issue is that my job has me on 3-6 month rotations, so
I'm not a permanent resident where ever I happen to be at the time. I've
keep my MI residency since it was the simplest option (most the time). I've
moved four times in two years since starting work...

Yeah, it's a big mess... If I end up getting a bike out here for the summer,
the plan is to register it in WI, live in CA, and have a MI I.D. Do you
think that the cops would like to hear that story?
