Center stand: I had a 82 650 and it was really hard to put on the center stand. I also have an ST1100 and it's even harder. I have finaly learned how from a friend who was the service manager at a large dealership. The trick he taught me and also helps the bike feel more solid and not tipping is this:
Make sure both side of the stand are on the ground before you try to lift. Because we're concerned about the bike tipping over we tend to pull it towards you - it's impossible to get the bike up on one side / leg of the stand. So put the center stand down and put a lot of weight on it. Rock the bike back and forth a little to get the feel of both legs being on the ground. My friend was looking at the legs and telling me when both were on the ground or not. Once I got the feel I then pushed down with my leg on the stand and pulled up. After a couple of tries I got it to go up and now I can do it all the time. One note: with mt ST1100 the rear shock was in really bad shape, once replaced it is much easier to get up on the center stand. I hope this helps.
