I was mainly referencing the underside of the pipes like you pointed out. I've seen '85s sit around on CL in perfect condition for $3,500, and 3 months later they're still posted. A true collector would know the difference, the average guy would see another 700S in good condition for $2000 and spring for that instead. I'd fall into that category myself. I don't mind a few dings here and there, my bike is almost 30 years old and looks like it's been well cared for, but regularly ridden too.
