Graham,

Sorry that you had to return here on such a sad note.

I run all four tires on the two bikes at about 34 PSI.

Yes, Harleys are here. In fact, the WOF inspector I talked with today was
a Harley guy and another fellow I talked to worked for the Harley dealership
just down the road and he said he was bringing Harleys down for inspection
every day or so. So, they are definitely here.

But, the Harley 'mystique' is here as well. And by that, I mean that some
folks just ride Harleys simply because they like them. But others are
caught up on all the Harley belt buckles and Harley labeled this and Harley
labeled that. "$400 for a little Harley-Davidson chrome doo-dad? Sure,
I'll have three to impress people". I think you know what I mean.

I've thought of selling one of my 770SC's because registration here for
anything over 500cc's is really dear these days ($500 and up). Should be
interesting, if I do, as I don't think there are any other 700SC's in the
country except for my two.

"Get your rare imported motorcycle here. Step up, step up. Only $15,000!
Be the first on your street to own one." (smile). As the Tui commercials
say, "Yeah, right!"

Cheers,

Dennis

Hi Dennis, I just got back from New Zealand. My sister in law died of a
heart attack so I was in the Tauranga/Gisborne area for 11 quick days. I
think 14k is real good for tires and remember different tire pressures
affect tire life and the Avons may require a different pressure than the
Dunlops. I saw Harleys in NZ on this trip - I hadn't seen them before and
quite a few upright sport bikes I have never seen here (like a Honda
GSX1400), Graham

I've got two CB700SC's; one's a '85 and the other's a '86 - both red/black.

I got the '85 in 2007 and I immediately put a set of new Avons onto it and I
got the '86 in 2009 and I immediately put a set of new Dunlops onto it.

I bought both of these bikes with about 10,000 miles on them and they both
have about 24,000 now. So, they've each gone approximately 14,000 since
their tires were new.

Today, when I ran the '86 with the Dunlops though the New Zealand Warrant of
Fitness tests (we have to do this every six months here in new Zealand) I
was amazed to find out that my front Dunlop has worn down sufficiently that
he said he'd almost failed me and for sure I'd have to replace if before I
came in again in six months.

Originally, I thought my Avons were the softer tire (softer equals better
grip through curves but they wear out sooner is the way I think it goes) so
I'd expected that the Avons would be the ones I'd have to replace first.
But, it seems like the reverse is happening here.

I looked at the patterns on my tires (see the photos) and I can see the
Dunlop has a line right down the center whereas the Avon has the lines in a
wave pattern with breaks. Not sure if that means much.

So, is 14,000 miles a reasonable mileage for needing to do a replacement?
And, did I have it backwards about the Avons being the softer tire? And,
what do folks think about Avons verse Dunlops in general? Or are you keen
on some other tire brand that you think would be well suited for a 700SC?
