There are studies, I'll run a search when I'm on a proper keyboard.

Essentially, a majority of helmet impacts are the side of the head and
along the chin bar, which if you think about lay-down motions makes a lot
of sense. You aren't likely to hit the top of your head unless you
catapulted over the bike, but most people launch forward or diagonally to
the side when the leave the bike.
