*Haha! You guys are a kick!*
*
*
*Okay, as someone who has been married for 34 years I have to weigh in.
There are so many dynamics that can play into a marriage that it's tough
for us to nail down any one thing. For me, I would have to credit SeaFoam.
[?]*
*
*
*Seriously though, ALL women have expectations...regardless of how
forcefully they express them. *
*
*
*I've met a TON of couples over the years who have fallen into a routine
where the woman does all the bookkeeping to the point that eventually the
man becomes disconnected from the family finances. Although he's earning an
income, she's left to determine how the money is spent, and pinching
pennies along the way to keep things afloat. Then, he comes home with an
$800 surprise! If they are like most couples, a little later that evening
she probably threw the checkbook at him and said: "Here...YOU do it!" (Been
there, done that.) :)*
*
*
*Years ago that was our situation. My wife, who is nothing short of AMAZING
with finances (and I suck!) was actually working at our bank and naturally
doing all our financials. I was working in radio at the time and would just
hand my check over to her, still in the envelope. It got to the point where
I wasn't even sure how much I was making!!*
*
*
*Then it happened...I saw a motorcycle I wanted to buy. It was a NEW Honda
Goldwing Interstate, and our current Goldwing was barely 2 years old. But I
wanted it BAD!! Problem was...I had no idea if we could afford it. Even
though it was a long time ago, I remember taking my wife to dinner and
having a talk about it. I wanted that bike so bad I could TASTE it, and she
knew it. But my disconnect from everything financial placed me in a
position where I basically had to come to her NOT UNLIKE a little boy
coming to his mommy and asking for permission to buy something. Gotta say
it left a bad taste in my mouth...but there was no one to blame but myself.*
*
*
*Over the years, and after throwing the checkbook back and forth a few
hundred times, I realized there was an element of my own personal
responsibility that I needed to address in our finances. As rotten as I was
with bookkeeping, I realized I couldn't afford to "opt out" of the
oversight of our money issues. If I did, I knew that it wouldn't bode well
for our relationship. The "mommy and little boy" arrangement was only going
to erode her respect for me until eventually there would be none left. So,
I had to suck it up and decide to grow up. Not easy, I might add. Growing
up runs contrary everything I ever wanted to do! :) But it made a huge
difference.*
*
*
*Just some thoughts.*
