Interesting, Graham. I guess it's OK then. Maybe I'll try it and if it doesn't leak, then Bob's yer Uncle. <smile>

I used to wonder the same thing (warped) but have seen so many like that, Graham On Nov 15, 2012, at 4:33 PM, Dennis wrote: Thanks, Dave and Joey, for your thoughts on changing back to non-synthetic. Last time I changed the oil on my '85 700SC, I hired it done here in Christchurch at a small motorcycle shop. I'm sorry I did that now. After the work was done, I noticed that I seemed to be leaking a small amount of oil from around the oil filter. But, as things usually do, I was busy and so I just ignored it. Now, some months later, I want to change the oil and sort out the leak and do it myself. I pull the oil plug and it looks like the two photos I've attached. Now I don't think that the plug itself was leaking but I'm not really sure since I was distracted by the oil filter leak. When I took the oil filter off, I could see that its rubber ring had twisted probably when it was tightened and that's why it leaked. So, I'll buy a new filter and replace it - no big deal. But I'm less sure of the drain plug. It looks warped to me. It might still be OK but I think I'll replace it as well. Anyone had a close look at one of these plugs lately? Does this look bogus to you? But, I've finally run out and I've discovered that synthetic doesn't seem to be available here or it is outrageously expensive. They also have something called a synthetic 'blend' but I don't know what that means. So, to keep things simple, I'm considering switching them back to high quality non-synthetic oils. Anyone have any thoughts or concerns about that? I've heard of lots of folks switching to synthetics but not switching back. Cheers from WAY down south (where Spring is raging).
