I think on some of the newer drive by wire it won't allow you to put it in neutral while the engine is under load. I've had the throttle stick on my tacoma when a cotterpin failed and the cruise control linkage got tangled up with the throttle linkage. I didn't freak, because I still had a clutch and brakes were enough to reign it in.
