Thanks for the response guys.
There was no problem with starting before I took it apart.
My original battery I knew was gonna die because it hasn't been charged at 
all for at least 1/2 a year.
The replacement battery was borrowed from a friend's bike which I just rode 
prior to borrowing his battery.
I'll open up the starter later and see if there's any problem there.
As for the solenoid, I have no idea what to do with that lol
