Wow, I'm a little surprised. I'm far from OCD, but I don't think I could let an
issue like that fester. What if you are stuck in rain or like on a gravel or
dirt road? Might have to use 3rd or even 4th gear and get a good running start.
It sort of reminds me of when I was seven and our first trailbike's clutch went
out, we would push start the bike then hand it off while it was in motion. Was
a bit of a challenge, but well worth the trouble at the time. But I'm not sure
I would want to get caught trying to push start a bike on a hot day here in the
south. you must have all kinds of patience. For that I salute you. :-)

One more thing, you are risking you and your bike to take a fall... consider
that.

The short story is I have a '96 750 Nighthawk. 51,000 miles. I know the starter
went out awhile ago. I have been lazy, been meaning to repair or replace. I
can jump start the bike so it gets me where I need to go. (Put in N, run a
short distance, pop clutch up to 2nd.) Since I ride everywhere, my bike is my
only transportation, I have found that I actually like not having a working
starter. My thinking is that it is a theft deterrent. I plan on repairing the
starter, but my question is, is there any "damage," long term or short to the
bike by starting it this way over a extended period of time?
