Are you sure it has to be the engine number and not the VIN?  All the bikes 
I own have the same number on the engine as on the neck, but I was told 
somewhere by someone that they don't necessarily have to match anymore, 
though  they once did. Anyway, in case they don't match, VIN trumps engine 
number, doesn't it? I once had headaches trying to get an untitled bike 
tagged because the engine number and the VIN on the neck didn't match. This 
was on a 1981 bike, the year they went from the short to long VIN. The neck 
had the long VIN, but the engine had the short one. I was assuming that the 
bike had originally been put in the system, but it had actually been the 
short one. I put the bike on a trailer and had the policeman look at the 
engine as it was more accessible, he ran that number as the VIN, and I got 
my VIN verification and later tags. Anyway, my point is, if you have access 
to the paperwork, consider the VIN to be the engine number.
