You have to loosen the JUST the top triple clamp bolt then you can loosen but
not remove the fork cap. Then pull the fork and clamp the lower caliper mounts
in a vice. Next remove the bottom bolt. Now you can pull the top cap off and
remove the guts. Now remove the dust seal and circlip. With the lower clamped
in a vice give the upper tube a bunch of yanks till it pops out. Easy!

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] FORK SEAL REPLACEMENT

Anybody on here every replaced the fork and dust seals on their own? I
attempted to do it but was stopped short quite early in the process. The
top cap bolt is exceptionally torqued and as most of you probably know, a
very shallow bolt height. Me being the, "I read it on the internet so I
think I know how to do it" mechanic decided to give it a go. If you plan on
doing this here's a tip,
you'll need a 27mm *six-point* socket.
I tried using a 12 point socket on it and couldn't get the leverage or grip
I needed to get that bolt loose. Came very close to stripping the top cap
bolt so I had to admit defeat and put the bike back together.
The other thing, in the factory shop manual they tell you to clamp the fork
to a table vice with a shop towel around it to protect the surface. I
recommend not doing this unless you've got rubber pads on your vice. It
spins in place because the towels don't grip the fork AT ALL. I had to go
to the hardware store and buy a couple rubber strap clamps.
Don't be a hero, get a second person in there to hold the fork or clamp
while you leverage the top cap.

Here's a naked pic :)
do you think the girlfriend was impressed? .....nope.
