I would first have the battery load tested..... I hear this claim alot and
99 percent of the time its because they constantly leave the key on, it
wasent properly hooked to the tender, or the battery is actualy older then
they think and due for replacement anyway....

But when it comes time to check the bike itself the amp meter suggestion is
the correct method
