After I go for a short ride (say to the grocery or the gas station) and let
the bike sit for ~5-25 minutes I often have trouble starting the bike. I
can hear the starter working but the bike doesn't actually turn over.

BUT If I wait an hour, it starts. Today I didn't think it would start and I
called roadside assistance, but as soon as the tow truck showed up (45
minutes later) it started!!! This has happened several times and the bike
runs fine otherwise.

I don't think I'm flooding it because I turn off the gas when I let it sit
and I don't use choke to start it when it is warm. I'm thinking it is
probably a fuel or an ignition problem but I am not sure where to start,
especially since this problem is difficult to replicate. Also, I am a
novice motorcycle mechanic.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas???

Thanks! -HR
