I am convinced that with my ‘84 CB650SC there is a level of battery power that is sufficient to crank pretty well but not enough voltage to fire the plugs. Simple test is to have someone push you to start, so full battery power is not being reduced by the starter. I would also get the battery load tested to be assured it is good. I would also be suspicious of the coils. Just pull a plug wire, hold it, and crank away! If you get an “Oh shit! I’ll never do that again moment, it probably isn’t the coils. You could chicken out (like I would) and use a substitute plug or tester. I have had several instances with a failing battery where it wouldn’t fire at all and I used up the battery, but it still started instantly with a little push. 3rd gear recommended. The lower the gear, the faster the engine rotates, and he more effort is required to push.

I will pay more attention to this next time it happens!! If you give it a little throttle when trying to do a hot start and it is too rich then that should fix it. Does it crank slower when trying to start it while hot? If so then service or replace the starter. Allen Thomas -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Nighthawk Motorcycle Lovers!" group.
