OK the backfire is from the exhaust getting full of fuel mixture and it explodes when the engine fires. If it only does it when hot then it is too rich, try opening the throttle a little bit to let in some more air or all the way to clear out the over rich mixture so you can try again. Your bike has fixed floats so while that would be suspect normally it isn't your problem. Yea choke plungers sound likely, or just too many turns out on the pilot screws. A bad coil would drop spark once running so that isn't likely. To test check ohms between the power and signal posts they should be 3 ohm. Then test between both spark plug leads it should be about 10k-15k ohm. What do your plugs look like? Take the bike for a 15 minute ride and run it hard. Then park it and let it idle for about 3 minutes. Shut it off and pull the plugs. They should be a light tan at the tip.
