I think you need to remove the carbs and clean them. Don't separate each carb 
from the rack, but remove from the bike and clean thoroughly. Do this before 
trying to fine tune or whatever else. 53k is a lot of miles on an 80s 
Nighthawk. I would check compression as well. Low compression on the 550 will 
contribute to poor idle.
