Update 2: So everything is back together. The fuel gauge is now working. The new valve cover gasket, as in typical fashion for N/H's so I hear, leaked. The new gear indicator switch had no effect, no neutral or gear lights.
Back to the starting board. Took everything back apart, clean everything up, and re-install. Bit of advice, add a lil bit more sealer on/around the "buttons/ears" of the gasket. And heres the big one, the "crush" washers that the V/C bolts go down through, should be replaced !! I found that the bolts actually bottom out BEFORE pulling they pull the cover down tight. I did not order/replace them. When I put the bolts back in the 2nd time, I actually added a washer to help pull the cover tight before the bolts bottom out. So far, it looks dry around the gasket. Next, the gear indicator switch. I removed the new switch, clipped a ground to the case, turn the key on, and manually worked the "T" that's inside the switch. Seems I had it 180 degrees off. Presto! Neutral light is on. But........ no gear is showing up on the dash gauge. Damn it. Well, I decide to check out the wiring from the switch to the gauge in the dash. Starting from the switch, following all the wiring and connectors all the way up to the dash. Removed the dash/fairing and you guessed it, the very last connector inside the dash cluster was unplugged!! Which means I may not have needed the $70 switch to start with...... stupid me. Put everything back together and knock on wood, no leaks, gas gauge works, and so does the gear indicator !!! All a learning lesson I guess. Hopefully if some other newbie N/H owners have these same issues, they will come across this post and save themselves a few headaches.
