I second the float/needle valve in the bowl(s), especially if it runs ok 
when actually consuming gas.
Level the bike. Connect a tube and glass viewing tube/pipette to the bowl 
drains and hold it(them) up next to the side of the bowl(s). The fuel 
should find the same level in  the glass tube, outside the float bowl, that 
it is holding at inside the bowl. Look to see if the floats are keeping the 
fuel level from going above the line if the bowl seals. In the worst cases 
it will simply overflow and come out the tube, no matter how high you hold 
it relative to the float bowl.

Floats do go bad, and it is sometimes really hard to tell. If you see any 
discoloration inside the float, then it has started to leak and is not as 
"floaty" anymore. Also look for a bad needle valve.
