I have unfortunately never been even close to a real live 83 550. But I do own a several 84 500's and a 96 750. All of them but one have had the rivets drilled out and the baffles removed at one time or another. I can tell you that on the 500, it makes a BIG difference. It's loud. I suspect your 550 would be too.
If your 550 has a collector box under it to go 4 into 2, and I believe it does, you can remove the sections in back of the collector box and replace it with something less baffled.
