I've got a bike that acts the same way. It will "idle" fine at 3K and 
sometimes even 2K. Takes a spritz of starter fluid to get it going. Runs 
great down the highway, but if I don't keep goosing it at the red lights, 
it'll stall out. I got all the air leak issues, meaning the carb boots and 
air box, straightened out, and I tried different mixture settings. Pretty 
clear that it's the slow jets. Just waiting for that to come to the top on 
the priority list since it's a bike I just plan to flip now that the 
craigslist prices have done their spring jump.
