It sounds like a very common problem. Same thing also happened to my 96 750. Just find the whole in the wall shop to take your bike too. I rode my yellow 96 into my mechanic's shop about 8 years ago. He looked up and said "Just as ugly a color as when Honda introduced it in 1996, good think they only made for one year". Been my mechanic ever sense. I just had this done in January and got to watch him work on it as I watched. Didn't look all that hard if you have steady hands and take it slow. You unscrew the two screws and you can get to everything. I'm not that mechanically inclined but think I could do it myself now that I've seen it done but then again my mechanic has been in business for 30 years.
You could also look on eBay. Pinwall Cycles (eBay store) seams to always have 750 parts and they have been great to me. If you don't find what you're looking for you can send them an email. They've had stuff that I was looking for in the past that wasn't listed but sold to me at a fair price.
