Yeah, I told him I don't think the tires are good anymore. He kept insisting
they were. It's not like I have any objections buying new tires from him. I
just wonder why he wouldn't even cross his mind it's unsafe!

I don't think you can hold the dealer or salesman accountable for it. As a
buyer it's your responsibility to assume the salesman will tell you whatever he
thinks you want to hear to buy the object he's selling. That said, I would
replace the tires immediately. Whether they appear to be in good condition or
not I wouldn't take a chance on something so essential to keeping the shiny
side up.

I would not trust tires even ten years old, let alone twenty!

yeah, right now my bike is in the shop and they have to change the fork seals
as well. It's a new to me bike. Is it wrong for a dealer to claim 20+ year old
tires, possibly 30 year old tires, to be in good condition because it had been
stored in a shed with a cover? The salesman claims I can still get 2 seasons
out of them. He says the tires never saw the sun and therefore has no cracks on
the walls and that there is quite a lot of threading left. The bike has less
than 4200mi on them. But, 30 year old tires..... i'm sure there is some dry-rot
and the composition of the tires have degraded even though there are no signs
of cracking....

It's a little different than you're used to. It feels woobly and top heavy at
first. I found myself scared to get low in the turns, but started building the
trust slowly. Now I scrape my pegs. The pegs are in a perfect spot for the DS
setup, in my opinion. Just watch those front fork seals. Mine cost a pretty
penny after two seasons of trail/highway riding. They were "the worst" my
mechanic had ever seen. He didn't comment on all of my other mods---not exactly
mechanic approved workmanship, but gets the job done.
