I think even a brand new bike might need some choke to start. In my experience this is something that depends a lot on the bike, the particular carb setup, and more largely on the temperature. In general, the colder the weather the more the choke is needed. In my NH750, I almost always can start the engine with no choke (unless it is extremely cold), but I will need a bit of of choke in the next couple of seconds or the engine dies. On my cbr1000f, I can't almost never start with no choke, no matter how hot it's outside. I think each bike has her own character no matter how old it is. You just need to find what's yours.
