I've been stranded with a dead battery before. Bike was running fine for
about an hour, pulled into a gas station, filled up, turned the key and
pushed the button and bleh. Tried again, bleh. Then I tried push starting
it, in the parking lot of the crowded gas station, and nothing. So I turned
around and pushed it the other direction, popped the clutch, and it caught!
Stumbled for 2-3 seconds, then blah. I tried a few more times after that
but nothing. Now, it doesn't matter how awesome your bike looks, *nobody*
looks cool pushing their bike back and forth across a busy parking lot
trying to start it. I pushed it off to the side, pulled the battery out,
found it a little low in a couple cells so I bought some water and filled
it up, then asked somebody for a jump. I had to let it charge for a few
minutes before it would run on its own, then I disconnected the jumpers,
pushed the battery back in, and rode the 100 miles back home trying to keep
the revs up and avoiding stops. If the battery is completely flat it won't
have enough juice to run the CDI apparently.
