Yeah, Kyle, I've been there with the '83 550. Particularly tricky.
Since it is electronic ignition, you need some voltage to even get a spark.

I think I related this before. I had an appointment in Seattle, an hour 
drive (without delays, like an overturned propane truck).
I borrowed my wife's Gerbings heated liner and took off. It was a glorious 
ride! Everything started and worked fine on the way back too. Another 
glorious ride as the cold evening weather set in.
When I got home I shut off to open the garage door and it would not start 
up again. It was really dead. I was really glad I did not stop along the 
way.

Never had any actual charging issues with that bike, but I found that you 
can suck all the alternator current out with a heater even on the freeway.
But that's another story.
